Democrat Calls for Review of Education Department’s Oversight of Colleges

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) has asked the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to review how the Education Department approves colleges to participate in federal student aid programs and how effectively regulators monitor potential problems, reports Inside Higher Ed.

McCaskill is the ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Her request comes several weeks after she and Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, the Republican chair of the investigatory subcommittee, began looking into the role of accreditors in assessing quality and financial health of institutions. It also comes after the GAO issued a report last year recommending that the department improve its oversight of colleges and accrediting agencies.
