The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) issued an update in 2002 about its efforts to implement new reporting categories on race and ethnicity for the IPEDS Fall Enrollment survey. NCES indicated at that time that further discussion would be necessary with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) before any new changes in aggregate reporting of race and ethnicity at the institutional level are recommended.

Therefore, NCES recommended then, and continues to recommend, the following:

œNCES strongly recommends that institutions do nothing at this time to change their current race and ethnicity reporting systems and formats; it would be best to wait until more definitive decisions have been made. We will advise the postsecondary education community as soon as resolution is reached, as well as the time frame for implementation.

AACRAO will convey any new announcement from NCES whenever it is made.
