Executive Symposium

9th Annual SEM Executive Symposium

Balancing Student and Institutional Success

Session Descriptions
Sunday, October 26, 2014

SEM Core Concepts
8:45 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Tom Green, AACRAO Associate Executive Director, Consulting and SEM

The Symposium begins by sorting through many perspectives on strategic enrollment management to identify core concepts and provide participants with common understandings to facilitate conversations throughout the day. This will be a necessary component for persons new to SEM and a useful refresher for SEM veterans.

SEM and Student Success
10:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
Susan Gottheil, Vice Provost (Students), University of Manitoba

The 40-year history of SEM practice has seen a gradual shift in focus from recruitment to retention in addressing enrollment goals. The current emphasis on promoting student persistence and degree completion is more than the latest SEM fad – it is here to stay. In many ways, Canadian institutions are leading the way in this focus on student success.

Creating Effective SEM Organizations
1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
William Serrata, President, El Paso Community College

Reorganizing an institution to align with SEM concepts is a challenging proposition. This session focuses on Dr. Serrata’s experiences in creating SEM organizations at two institutions, first as Vice President at South Texas College and currently as President at El Paso Community College. His input will be invaluable in helping Symposium participants develop their own plans for implementing SEM.

Moving Forward with SEM Planning
2:45 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Faculty Panel

This closing session of the Symposium will bring the day’s input together, with the faculty responding to participants’ questions and offering additional counsel for implementing SEM. This dialogue among faculty and participants provides a simulating exchange of ideas and is a highlight of each year’s Symposium.
