Spend two days diving into the work of the registrar’s office. This workshop is for those new to the profession and will address many of the “what” and “how” questions that make up the work of the registrar. A significant portion of the workshop will focus on understanding and applying FERPA. Attendees will leave the workshop with a greater understanding of the depth and breadth of the work of the registrar, where to find information and answers, and a solid network of professional colleagues.

  • the role and mission of the registrar in higher education today;
  • helpful information resources that registrars use for their daily work;
  • the registrar's impact on academic policies and regulations;
  • the latest interpretations of FERPA and other federal compliance issues.

Presenter: Lara Medley, Registrar, Colorado School of Mines

Lara Medley is the Registrar at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, where she has been for 12 years. She has worked in higher education for a total of 31 years with experience in all areas of registration and records, advising, transfer evaluation, degree audit, and computer applications programming. She was on the RMACRAO Board of Directors for 11 years in several roles including President, Vice President for Colorado, and Exhibitor and LAC Liaison. 

For AACRAO, Lara was previously the Chair of the State and Regional Relations Committee, Co-chair of Volunteers for the Denver meeting.  She is the incoming Vice President for Records and Academic Services on the AACRAO Board of Directors. Lara holds a B.A. in International Spanish for the Professions as well as a Master of Public Administration, both from the University of Colorado.

LeRoy Rooker, former director of the U.S. Department of Education's Family Policy Compliance Office and AACRAO Senior Fellow, is the nation's leading expert on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a comprehensive federal law that provides privacy protections for student education records. Mr. Rooker served for 21 years as director of FPCO and is well known throughout the higher education community because of his extensive outreach while at the Department.
