Undocumented Students in the U.S.: Admission and Verification

The primary goal of this survey was to better understand the processes related to undocumented students that are used by U.S. postsecondary education institutions. The survey was conducted from February 25 to March 8, 2009. The total number of respondents was 613 institutions (260 full responses and 353 responses not completely filled out).

The survey will provide AACRAO members with U.S. national and state data on admissions and verification procedures.

Academic Progression and Institutional Policies

This report is from a survey conducted in the spring of 2008 on institutional policies concerning student's academic progression.  Respondents included 511 institutions.

Student Information Systems, Degree Audit and NCAA Compliance Reporting

These two reports are from a two-part survey--one part for all responding institutions, focusing on their student information systems and automation of degree audit; the other part exclusively for NCAA institutions and dealing with student-athlete eligibility certification. The original survey was conducted in July 2007 for the Georgia Institute of Technology's Office of the Registrar and Athletic Association by AACRAO Consulting. We thank these two offices for their permission to publish the reports.

Registrars Survey

AACRAO recently conducted a survey of the Registrar's Offices at its member institutions on several topics, including functions performed by the office, office location, whether the Registrar's office functions within a one-stop shop, and office salaries.

U.S. Visa Policy and SEVIS Survey

AACRAO has conducted a survey of its membership to gauge the satisfaction level of institutions of higher education that participate in the federal Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The survey is a follow-up to a similar 2004 SEVIS satisfaction survey and intends to measure participant contentment after the second anniversary of the federally mandated SEVIS implementation deadline. This follow-up survey was prompted by the Government Accountability Office (formerly the General Accounting Office), the nonpartisan investigative agency of Congress. The survey was conducted from March 14, 2005 to May 14, 2005 and received a total of 384 responses. Of the total number of respondents, 283 included demographic information in their response and as such, cross-tabulations that include state, control, type or enrollment reflect only these respondents.

Grades and Grading Practices Report

AACRAO recently conducted a survey of its membership to determine current norms in the areas of grades and grading practices. The survey was sent to approximately 2,400 total AACRAO member institutions
and 496 responses were received. Of those 496 responses, 77 were removed either because they were duplicate submissions from a single institution, the respondent did not report an IPEDS Unit ID, or the respondent reported an invalid IPEDS Unit Id. In the event of duplicate submissions, only the first response was taken into account.

FERPA/Voter Registration Survey

AACRAO conducted a survey of its membership to learn more about how institutions comply with the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the voter registration provisions of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA). The survey was prompted, in part, by an inquiry from the New Voters Project—a youth voter mobilization campaign organized by the PEW Charitable Trusts, The George Washington University, and the State Public Interest Research Groups—which aims to increase the participation of young voters in the 2004 election cycle. The survey was conducted from March 10, 2004 to March 31, 2004 and received 560 institutional responses.

SEVIS Report

AACRAO has conducted a survey of its membership to gauge the satisfaction level of institutions of higher education that participate in the federal Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The survey intends to measure participants’ contentment at the first anniversary of the federally-mandated SEVIS implementation deadline and was prompted by the General Accounting Office. The survey was conducted from February 2, 2004 to March 8, 2004 and received 601 responses.

Online Registration Services Survey Results

AACRAO recently conducted a survey of its membership to gather information about online registration services. A similar survey was conducted in 1999.

Respondents were asked whether institutions offer the following online services: class schedules, catalog information, instructor information, registration, payment processing, registrar’s office homepage, schedule planning services, community information. Those institutions who reported offering online information and services were also asked about weather they developed those services in-house or if they used and outside firm. The survey also asked institutions whether they offer schedules and catalogs in printed form, online, or both.
