Using the AACRAO International Guide: A Resource for International Professionals (included in workshop fee), we will introduce beginning professionals to the key aspects of international admissions. Topics will include recruitment basics, technology, inquiry and application processing, using appropriate admission criteria, English proficiency and TOEFL, and the process involved with admitting international students—including evaluation of documents.

M1.2 - Admissions 101: Operations and Management

This is a comprehensive one-day workshop for assistant, associate, and new director-level personnel with three to five years of experience in admissions. The workshop includes modules on recruitment and marketing, processing and operation, technology, and professional responsibility.

M1.3 - Awarding Transfer Credit for Non-Traditional Education and Experience

AARTS/SMARTS, CLEP, ACE, PONSI, etc. What does this all mean, and how can it translate into academic credit towards degree requirements? Topics covered will include military education and experience, credit by exam, police academy training, and prior learning assessment. Attendees will leave the workshop with the basic knowledge for completing non-traditional evaluations, as well as practical tools for working with academic departments to get them approved.

M1.4 - Enrollment Management 101: Covering the Basics in Best Practices and Strategic Planning

Learn the basic tenets and considerations in this practical workshop on enrollment management and how to approach strategic enrollment planning. The first part of the workshop will focus on the basic tenets and considerations for enrollment management and the keys for effective strategic enrollment planning. Next, the presentation will show how strategic enrollment planning should evolve from a strategic and systems thinking approach that focuses on a compelling institutional purpose. The final part of the presentation will encourage participants to assume active 'stakeholder' roles in the planning process.

This workshop will provide an introduction to compliance issues related to at least the following federal compliance topics: SEVIS, Student Right to Know/Cleary Act, Solomon Amendment, and FERPA. The workshop will include not only a summary of the compliance expectations, but it will also include time for participants to openly discuss and share their current approaches and “best practices.”

M2.1 - Introduction to IPEDS Data Tools: A Hands-On Test Drive

This workshop will provide participants with an overview of several NCES data sources, including: College Opportunities Online (COOL), the Executive Peer Tool (ExPT), the Peer Analysis System (PAS), and the Dataset Cutting Tool (DAS). Participants will have hands-on activities. The workshop will be offered off-site, with transportation provided in the workshop fee.

M2.2 - Mentoring: Principles, Practices, and Resources

The future of organizations depends on quality leadership. Attendees will be introduced to various mentoring principles, practices, and resources that can help them to develop their own personal mentoring style. Attendees will be introduced to several mentoring methodologies, but will focus more in depth on that of Norman Cohen. The workshop fee includes a copy of three of Dr. Cohen’s publications, which will be used during the workshop for the planning exercises, and may be taken home.

This FREE workshop is offered to all state and regional officers, including the traditional officers such as president, vice president, etc., and other people in leadership roles, including newsletter editors, Web masters, and local arrangements chairs. The State and Regional Relations Committee is planning the workshop with three primary segments: a general leadership topic relevant to all participants; break-out sessions for smaller groups by organization size or leadership roles; and discussion time.

This session will define the technologies of Podcasts, Blogs, and Wikis and offer strengths and limitations for all. We will brainstorm uses of these technologies as well as solicit existing practices. Participants should leave this session with several concrete applications for these technologies for advising.

Evidence reveals that the quality of leadership in an organization is directly correlated with the degree of effectiveness in the attainment of institutional goals. In this presentation, we will look at two colleges’ attempts to reconfigure the practice of leadership development specifically, to find a process more fitting to our times and develop leaders within the organization that will spur the educational enterprise toward greatness. The workshop will focus on the planning, development, implementation, and assessment of a year-long leadership program that seeks to engage employees more fully. Increased employee engagement and commitment translates into increased organizational success.

M3.4 - Secured E-Transcripts: How Schools Have Automated Both the Order and Delivery Process Using XML and the Web

This is a repeat of the popular Electronic Transcript workshop presented in Boston. Starting with a history of electronic transcripts, how they are now accepted and becoming expected, in admissions and higher education in general, the workshop will provide a guided tour of evolving technologies available to registrars to not only produce them, but understand how to deal with them not just as a concept but as a soon-to-be required component of the registrar’s toolbox.

Organizational longevity and effectiveness don’t just happen. Both require intentional planning, forethought, commitment, and engagement at all levels of the organization. One element is succession planning, which is a method for preparing staff to meet an organization’s needs over time. Key components of succession planning are: strategic planning, organizational analysis, employee development and cultivating individual leadership skills. Exploring these four components and how they link to organizational growth and success will be the basis for this workshop.
