Call for Committee Membership from AACRAO President Betty Huff

Dear AACRAO Member:

I am pleased to announce the formation of a new AACRAO committee and another opportunity for involvement in the Association. The Bylaws of the AACRAO Association state that the duties of the Board of Directors include the duty to "determine, monitor and strengthen the Association's public standing." To this end, the members of the Board of Directors are aware of and engage in opportunities to inform, where appropriate, public policy and federal regulations when relevant to the practice of the profession and are believed to be in the best interests of students. While the Board of Directors is elected by the Association membership and is in a position to be the voice of the Association, it endeavors to solicit the opinion of the broader membership on matters of public policy and regulatory action. Since it is not practical to consult with the entire membership, this committee will assist the Board and the AACRAO Office in reviewing and responding to issues of public policy and pending legislation.

The Public Policy Advisory Committee will consist of a group of 5-10 experienced, representative AACRAO members recommended by the President and appointed by the Board to serve as a forum for the discussion of developing legislation or public policy of interest to the AACRAO membership in particular and higher education in general. This group will not make policy for AACRAO nor commit to position statements, but will assist the Board of Directors and the professional staff at AACRAO in assessing the response and interest of the organization around pending legislation, proposed regulations and public policy.

The Public Policy Advisory Committee, which will report to the President of the Association in the committee structure, should not be viewed as a political action committee or lobbying group. It will engage with the Board of Directors and the AACRAO Office by representing various views of the membership. Much of the work will be done electronically or on conference calls and represents an opportunity for greater membership input when AACRAO needs to respond quickly to critical issues at the national level.

If you are interested in serving on this advisory group, please send an email to me at bjhuff@memphis.edu indicating your interest and any experience you may have had in this area. I would appreciate a statement of interest, including any questions that you may have, by September 30, 2010.

Betty J. Huff
AACRAO President
