Request an Evaluation of Study Abroad Experience of US Student

What follows is the information concerning the Study Abroad Evaluation Service, offered by AACRAO to its member institutions. This evaluation is exclusively for US students who have studied abroad for up to one year. AACRAO is committed to producing evaluations within 15 business days from receipt of a complete packet from the requestor. All of the AACRAO evaluators have worked for a number of years at colleges and universities evaluating foreign educational credentials for admission and placement purposes. The average length of previous experience is over 14 years, and none have less than seven years' experience.

In order to assure consistency the evaluations of foreign credentials by the International Education Services follow the placement recommendations approved by the National Council on the Evaluation of Foreign Education Credentials (CEC) when available. The Council is the only interassociational body in the U.S. specifically created to review, modify, and approve placement recommendations written for publications used by the U.S. admissions community. Where placement recommendations do not exist AACRAO follows the placements suggested by the AACRAO-USAID Cooperative Agreement, which is a more than 30 year project evaluating educational credentials of foreign students nominated for USAID funding to study in the US.

Procedures for requesting an evaluation of Study Abroad educational experience

Institutions interested in having the AACRAO's International Education Services evaluate Study Abroad education credentials need to complete the Request for Study Abroad Evaluation Form/Study Abroad
Evaluation Form (.pdf) and provide the required attachments to facilitate the analysis process. Please note that this form and these instructions are for Study Abroad evaluations of your students who have studied outside the US for up to one year. The evaluation you receive will contain a listing of coursework completed, suggested U.S. grades, and suggested undergraduate semester credit hours.

  1. A copy of the Request for Study Abroad Evaluation Form/Study Abroad Evaluation Form (.pdf) must be sent to AACRAO.

  2. Copies of all foreign education records (in the original language) submitted on behalf of the applicant. Records not in English must also be accompanied by an English translation. The translations do not need to be "certified" or "official translations"; anyone fluent in the language of the record and English may do the translation -- even the student. The translator must sign and provide contact information. The translation must be a literal, word-for-word translation, and not an interpretive translation. Photocopies of the educational records and translation are acceptable.

  3. AACRAO will invoice you for the $60 fee (plus any optional Rush service fees) when the evaluation is completed and is mailed to you. If you need your student to pay for the evaluation the student will need to complete the "Method of Payment" section of the Form. We are required to charge more when paying by Money Order or credit cards due to bank charges incurred by AACRAO.

  4. If you cancel the request for an evaluation before the evaluation is completed you will be charged a $30 cancellation fee.

  5. All materials submitted to the International Education Services become the property of AACRAO and cannot be returned.

  6. Evaluations are usually completed within 15 business days; however, AACRAO cannot guarantee all evaluations will be done within that time frame. Completed evaluations are mailed first class, or foreign airmail for overseas addresses. If you need to have evaluations sent by courier service you will need to prepay for such service and include that information. We recommend FedEx. 48 hour service includes FedEx return.

  7. The Request for Study Abroad Evaluation Form and attachments can be mailed or sent by FAX to:

Our offices are located in a building which has limited public access, open only for employees who work in the building. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you mail, fax, or use a courier service (FedEx, UPS, etc.) to send your requests to AACRAO for evaluation.
