Identity Management at USC: Collaboration, Governance and Access

Robert Morley and Brendan Bellina

Presentation Available - (download .pdf)

Identity and Access Management (IAM) at USC has been a policy-driven grass-roots effort for 5 years. During that time collaborative committees with representatives from many academic and administrative units have allowed accelerated growth of applications relying upon identity data while governing the release of that data. With the backing of the University data stewards in the offices of the Registrar, Provost, and Personnel Services, policies have been implemented regarding the release of identifying sensitive information to both internal departments and external vendors. The speakers will discuss the make-up of these committees, the governance policies that have been implemented, and some of the applications that have been enabled securely through this process.

Presentation Available - (download .pdf)

The speakers will present their plan to pilot the use of Shibboleth, the community-source federating single sign-on software, to provide Stanford students and staff access to National Student Clearinghouse web applications using their Stanford credentials. Through a single sign-on process controlled by Stanford University, students will gain access to the Clearinghouse Student Self-Service application, and staff will gain access to the Clearinghouse College and University secure web portal. The presenters will describe the advantages of this approach relative to the current method for authenticating and granting access to NSC data and will consider how the approach will expand to other applications.
