Identity Management: Moving Your Institution Forward
On July 9-10, AACRAO will host a two-day interactive workshop on identity management for college and university registrars and their information technology colleagues to attend together. The workshop will explore multi-institutional strategies for identity management on college campuses and help set its future direction. Among the topics to be covered are:
- External and internal drivers for IdM
- Examples of successful campus infrastructures and federations
- Relevant federal and industry standards
- Relationship between the registrar and IT in facilitating IdM
- Policy development and governance
Expanding demands on campus information systems have led to the development of automated approaches to enable the right access for the right people to the right resources. Increasingly, automation alone is not enough to provide consistent privacy, data use, and security policy across all our services. Campus information systems must integrate information about individuals from multiple sources and manage that information to facilitate people's access to broad campus services. This requires access policy to be defined in one place and leveraged not only by our student system, but also by our portals, learning management systems, wireless access services, and academic applications. Enabling security and opportunity, this consolidated identity infrastructure indicates to an application when to turn an individual's access on or off using the person's role or status and defined policy.
Because of the interdependence of the technology and policy infrastructure inherent in identity services, AACRAO is collaborating with
Why Should Registrars and IT staff work together on issues related to electronic identity?
Because we are both dealing with problems related to enabling new online services for students and related groups such as parents, accommodating privacy concerns, and ensuring appropriate system access. Identity management can offer solutions for establishing online identity, providing access to distance students or temporary users, and reducing paper while providing more benefits with less staff time. This workshop will provide opportunities to learn more about why this topic is timely and what guidance is available for policy development and governance strategies to move your institution forward.
In this electronic age, Identity Management expertise is emerging as a requirement in the Registrar toolkit. This workshop will be a one of a series of resources AACRAO will develop for the higher education community. Participants will be offered a chance to shape these future efforts.
