AACRAO Joins Coalition Urging Trump to Support DACA, DREAM Act

AACRAO joined the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and 25 other organizations to send a letter to President-elect Donald Trump in support of extending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The letter, sent on Monday, urges the president-elect to keep current DACA measures in place and to support Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act legislation in the 115th Congress.

Of the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States, DREAMers constitute an untapped resource with great potential. While President Obama's DACA order has provided relief for some 750,000 young people, the program is only a stopgap measure. Passage of the DREAM Act—and ultimately a fair, just, and comprehensive immigration reform—is needed, the organizations argue.

"Extending DACA and supporting the DREAM Act would be welcome first steps to the kind of immigration reform that will indeed make America greater, as a nation of immigrants that not only works to provide opportunity for its own citizens, but that also continues to open the door to new Americans," the groups said in the letter.
